A thought for the weekend. I’ve had a fairly intense week with clients who are confronted with a range of complex issues. As the week ends, I’m struck by how much effort is needed to stay ‘above’ the detailed issues in order to maintain a ‘global’ perspective.
It is that nature of my work that, in trying to help businesses simplify, I have to be able to see their operations as a whole. This, of course, should also be the job of those working in the business – especially senior people. But it is very difficult.
As we try to take the helicopter view, the detail continues to try and drag us in. It’s like trying to keep our ‘copter out of an upside-down tornado – a whirlpool in the air. As an outsider, it can sometimes be easier to see this whirlpool and avoid it. But the longer you work with – or in – a business, the harder it gets.
As I say often: simple ain’t simple.
