I was taught to avoid using this word wherever possible, and I do to this day. It IS a very lazy word, and 90% of the time there is a better word to use. I cannot believe your excerpt! I had to stop, it was more of a beat-box excerpt than a piece of writing with all the 'gots' in there. I completely agree.
